大橋家住宅
Wealthy merchant's Edo-period residence in Kurashiki's Bikan district showcasing traditional architecture.
Ohashi House stands in Kurashiki's Bikan historical district, a short walk from the canal. Built in the early 19th century for a wealthy merchant family, it is one of the largest private residences preserved from the Edo period and is designated an Important Cultural Property. The structure uses a combination of white-plastered walls and dark timber framing typical of Kurashiki's merchant architecture. Inside, you can walk through rooms furnished with period items, and the layout reveals how prosperous merchant households were organized across different functions. The Bikan district around it has cafes, craft shops, and galleries in similarly preserved buildings.
