Overview
Restored 18th-century farmhouse and folk-craft display in central Ohara; weekend mochi-pounding demos.
A restored 18th-century thatched farmhouse and folk-craft display set in the central Ohara village, focused on the agricultural and textile traditions of the Ohara basin. The main thatched roof is rebuilt every 30 years using local cedar grass; the last full re-thatching was in 2018. Weekend mochi-pounding demonstrations run during peak seasons. The attached shop sells shibazuke (Ohara's salt-cured eggplant relish), preserved here in wooden barrels.
Local tips
Closed Tuesdays. Shibazuke sets sell out by mid-afternoon; arrive before noon if you want the autumn-pressing variety.
