Okayama Korakuen is located on an island across the Asahi River from Okayama Castle.
Before Okayama Korakuen had its current south gate, the garden's formal entrance was a private dock on the riverbank used by Edo-period lords arriving by boat from Okayama Castle. They stepped ashore here and passed through a gate built specifically for their visits. By the 1800s the inlet had filled with river sediment, the gate was relocated, and during the Taisho era the entrance was filled in entirely. The dock and original stone staircase were excavated in 2012 using historical maps as a guide and opened to the public in 2014. The traces of the old pathway are still visible in the ground.
