Overview

Strong winds off the Sea of Japan blow over Akita Prefecture throughout the year.

Akita Port's 13 offshore wind turbines have been generating electricity since January 2023, each capable of powering roughly 4,000 households. The shallow seabed and wide shoals made the port an ideal site for one of Japan's first full offshore wind farms. At 150 meters tall, the turbines stand noticeably taller than their onshore counterparts, which average around 120 meters, and are unobstructed by terrain or existing structures. Akita Prefecture has operated over 280 onshore turbines since 2000, taking advantage of the strong year-round winds off the Sea of Japan. The offshore farm represents a step in the prefecture's move toward carbon neutrality and is visible from the port area.
