Overview

Southern reef beach with rich snorkeling, exposed tide pools at low tide, and sea turtle nesting.

Also called John Man Beach after the castaway John Manjiro who landed here returning from America in the 1850s, this natural reef beach near Okinawa's southern tip draws snorkelers to its crystal-clear shallows full of tropical fish and live coral. At low tide the reef exposes tide pools where locals gather to observe sea creatures and go clamming. Sea turtles still nest on the sand here each summer.

Local tips

Local currents can be strong. Ask lifeguards about safe swimming zones before heading in.
