Obama Traditional Townscape Preservation Center
museum
(小浜町並み保存資料館 家屋全体)
The distinctive townscape of the Nishigumi district reflects Obama’s long history as a thriving port town that connected Kyoto to the sea.
This preservation center occupies a Taisho-era machiya in Obama's historic Nishigumi district, restored to show visitors the characteristic layout of a merchant townhouse. The long narrow building has four tatami rooms, a high-ceilinged kitchen with a traditional stove, a courtyard garden with a well, and a storehouse at the rear. Photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries line the walls, and tourist information about the surrounding area is available at a reception desk inside. The center has been at its current address since 2016, having moved from the original 1997 location nearby.
