Nozawa Onsen Village

Thirteen free public bathhouses called sotoyu dot this ski village, each maintained by a different neighborhood association using a centuries-old communal system. The water runs scalding hot from natural sources, and locals sit for hours in the wooden tubs exchanging village news. Ogama, the communal cooking spring, boils eggs and vegetables in water reaching 90 degrees Celsius at the village center.
