A historic hot spring village that doubles as one of Japan's most beloved ski resorts, combining excellent powder skiing with après-ski soaks in centuries-old public bathhouses. The village maintains 13 free public baths fed by natural hot springs, where skiers and locals soak together in traditional fashion. The charming pedestrian streets lined with ryokan and izakayas create an atmosphere impossible to replicate at modern resort developments.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
