Overview

Brown-bear sanctuary at the top of Mt. Shihorei, reached by a 7-minute aerial gondola from Noboribetsu Onsen.

About 70 Hokkaido brown bears live in two enclosures at the summit of Mt. Shihorei, 549 meters above the onsen town. The gondola climbs from a station near the bus terminal in town. A glass-walled human-cage observation tunnel puts visitors below the bears' eye level. The summit also has a small Ainu cultural museum and an observation deck looking down to Lake Kuttara.
