Temple 35 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, set in a forested valley with a sacred waterfall behind the main hall.
Temple 35 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, Kiyotakiji sits in the mountains above Tosa and is reached by a winding road through cedar forest followed by stone steps to the main hall. A natural spring on the grounds has long been considered to have medicinal properties, and the temple's name, meaning pure waterfall, refers to a small cascade visible from the approach path. The forest setting creates cool, filtered light even in summer, and the sound of spring water runs through the whole visit. Pilgrims often find this one of the more atmospheric stops on the Tosa section, positioned between the busier coastal temples and the remoter mountain ones further inland.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
