Small & tranquil Zen Buddhist temple in a leafy setting, home to historic wood & stone carvings.
Sekkeiji is Temple No. 33 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a small, tranquil Rinzai Zen temple set in a leafy neighborhood of Kochi City. The temple was founded over 1,200 years ago and houses important Buddhist wood and stone carvings, including statues attributed to the great sculptor Unkei. Despite its significance, Sekkeiji maintains a quiet, unassuming character that rewards visitors who slow down to examine the centuries-old sculptures and the simple beauty of the temple garden. The compact grounds can be explored in 15 to 20 minutes, making it an easy inclusion in a Kochi itinerary, especially when combined with the nearby Katsurahama Beach and the lively Hirome Market in central Kochi.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
