Niyodo River

仁淀川
Japan's purest river with surreal 'Niyodo Blue' cobalt waters and crystal-clear gorges.
Consistently ranked as Japan's most beautiful river, famous for its almost surreal cobalt-blue color nicknamed 'Niyodo Blue.' The Yasui Gorge features moss-covered cliffs and water so clear the riverbed stones are perfectly visible.
Consistently rated as Japan's clearest river in national water quality surveys. The exceptional clarity comes from the absence of major industrial development in the catchment area and a streambed geology that limits particulate suspension. The Nikobuchi pool near Niyodo Town is the most photogenic section, with aquamarine water visible 6 to 8 meters deep. The river is used for canyoning from July through September. Access to the main viewing areas requires a car; buses from Kochi City take about 90 minutes.
