Niukawakami Jinja Shrine (Kamisha)
shrine
丹生川上神社(上社)
Two bronze horses, not the usual lion-dogs, guard this sanctuary to a water deity. The main draw is a special omikuji fortune slip sold on-site. Its message appears only when placed in water. The shrine itself stands on a ridge above the Otaki Dam reservoir, near a river confluence with colorful foliage.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
