Overview
Colorful koi fish, exciting bull sumo tournaments, and finely crafted cloth: Ojiya City abounds with fascinating cultural heritage and age-old traditions.
Ojiya City in Niigata sits in a heavy-snowfall region where mineral-rich meltwater feeds the koi ponds and rice fields. Nishikigoi no Sato holds hundreds of colorful nishikigoi carp across aquariums, viewing pools, and garden ponds, with over 20 varieties on display. Across the road, the Orinoza Exhibition Hall details the production of Ojiya chijimi, a delicately crimped woven fabric made locally for over 400 years. From May to November, monthly tsunotsuki bullfighting events take place nearby, where Nambu shorthorn bulls lock horns in bouts where no animals are harmed.
