The Nishi-Umazuka tomb is a square burial mound surrounded by homes.
This square burial mound sits among residential streets in Osaka, managed by the Imperial Household Agency as a subsidiary tomb linked to Emperor Ojin. Its name, meaning 'West Horse Tomb,' comes from the theory that it was built for the emperor's horses, though archaeologists doubt this given its scale. Excavations around the edges in 1988 showed the original mound stood 9.4 meters high across about 0.2 hectares, its sides covered in fist-sized stones. The burial chamber remains sealed out of respect, so the appeal here is historical reflection on Japan's ancient burial traditions rather than museum-style exhibits.
