Nishi Azuma
西吾妻山
Overview
Volcanic skyline drive through the Azuma Mountains connecting Fukushima to Yamagata with alpine scenery and hot springs.
Nishi-Azuma is the highest peak in the Tohoku region outside of the major volcanic mountains, rising to 2,035 meters on the Fukushima-Yamagata border. In winter, the upper slopes develop large snow formations called juhyo, or ice monsters, where trees are encased in wind-driven frost. Rope cars and lifts make the upper terrain reachable without technical climbing, and the ski resort below offers groomed runs through the colder months. Hiking routes in summer and autumn wind through wetlands and alpine meadows, with patches of wildflowers in late spring and red-orange foliage by early October.
