Overview
A striking, well-preserved 19th-century brick furnace built for casting iron cannons.
One of the few surviving reverberatory furnaces in Japan, built to cast iron cannons for coastal defense. The towering brick chimneys stand beautifully against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains. It is a fantastic testament to how quickly Japan adopted Western industrial technology.
Local tips
Visit the adjacent tea plantation in spring to photograph the brick chimneys framed by bright green tea leaves and Mount Fuji.
