Overview
This branch temple of Rinnōji is located at the source of the hot springs of Yumoto Onsen.
Nikkōzan Yumoto Onsenji Temple sits at the source of the Yumoto Onsen hot springs, which were discovered in 788 by the monk Shōdō Shōnin, who built an original temple on a nearby peak and named the area Yakushi-yu, warm waters of Yakushi. In 1966, a typhoon sent a huge boulder crashing into the temple, destroying the building while the statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing, was found sitting on top of the boulder unharmed. The temple was rebuilt at its current location in 1973 and the statue re-enshrined at the center. The temple operates a public bath fed by the same hot spring, open by reservation.
