Jagged white cliffs of exposed tuff rise dramatically near the entrance to the Juniko Lakes area in the Shirakami Mountains. Erosion has carved these soft volcanic rock walls into a miniature Grand Canyon that glows gold in afternoon light. A short trail from the Juniko trailhead offers a sweeping viewpoint over the canyon and surrounding virgin beech forest.
