Natadera Temple
那谷寺
Overview
1,300-year-old temple built into volcanic rock formations that inspired Matsuo Basho's haiku.
Built directly into volcanic cliffs and caves that have been considered sacred for over 2,000 years, shaped by eruptions and eroded by ancient ocean currents. The monk Taicho founded it in 717 after a vision during meditation on Mt. Hakusan inspired him to build a temple in honor of Kannon. The site blends Buddhist, Shinto, and Hakusan mountain worship traditions, evident in the torii gates standing alongside temple buildings. The kondo main hall houses a 7.8-meter Kannon statue surrounded by local Kutani porcelain tiles, and the wooden halls and pagodas are carved with Chinese zodiac animals, peonies, and chrysanthemums. A 1637 reception hall and its garden are accessible for a separate admission fee.
