Overview
The birthplace of Japanese sake, where 500-year-old breweries still operate in atmospheric Naramachi lanes.
Nara is recognized as the birthplace of refined sake (seishu), and several historic breweries in the Naramachi area continue centuries-old traditions. Harushika Sake Brewery offers tastings of five sakes for 500 yen in a beautiful Edo-period building. Nearby Imanishi Seibei Shoten brews the famous 'Harushika' brand. The compact area makes a pleasant walking sake crawl through traditional wooden townhouses.
Local tips
At Harushika, ask about their exclusive 'Cho-Tokusen' daiginjo. It's rarely available outside the brewery and considered one of Nara's finest.
