Home to the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha statue, measuring 41 meters long and weighing 300 tons.
Nanzoin houses what is believed to be the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha, 41 meters long and 11 meters high, depicting the Buddha entering nirvana. Completed in 1995, it anchors a complex of smaller shrines and over 500 Buddhist deities spread across grounds that turn bright with autumn foliage. The temple also serves as the starting point of the Sasaguri Pilgrimage, an 88-temple circuit modeled on the Shikoku route but completable in a few days. One highlight is the Shichifukujin Tunnel, a passage lined with statues of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. It is an easy day trip from Fukuoka.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
