The Meiji-era brick aqueduct, not the Hojo garden, is Nanzen-ji's startling centerpiece. Arrive before 9am to photograph its Roman-style arches without crowds. Many visitors skip the Tenju-an sub-temple, which has its own garden and the densest autumn foliage on the grounds for a separate fee.
