Overview
A Meiji-era merchant mansion turned cultural space where you can sip matcha overlooking one of Morioka's finest hidden gardens.
Built in 1885 by a wealthy mining baron, Nanshoso is a remarkably preserved Meiji mansion with a stroll garden featuring a pond, stone lanterns, and carefully pruned pines. The property is now a cultural venue hosting occasional tea ceremonies and small exhibitions. Visitors can enjoy matcha and wagashi in the tatami room overlooking the garden for a modest fee, a slice of old Morioka that most travelers miss entirely.
Local tips
The garden is especially beautiful during autumn foliage in late October. The evening illumination event (check dates locally) transforms the pond reflections into pure magic.
