Golden fields of rape blossoms blooming against the backdrop of Mt. Kaimon.
In Kagoshima's warm southern climate, the 'Nanohana' (rape blossoms) begin blooming as early as late December and peak in January. The fields surrounding Lake Ikeda offer a stunning view of millions of yellow flowers with 'Satsuma Fuji' (Mt. Kaimon) in the distance. It is one of the earliest signs of spring in Japan. The area hosts the Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon in early January, which is Japan's first full marathon of the year. The golden fields against the deep blue of the lake and the perfect cone of the volcano make it one of Kyushu's most picturesque landscapes during the winter months.
