Namba Yasaka Shrine
難波八阪神社
4.5Est. 30Osaka, Kansai
Overview
A Namba shrine with a giant lion-head stage that swallows evil spirits and breathes out good fortune.
Namba Yasaka Shrine's showstopper is the enormous lion-head stage (Shishi-den) standing 12 meters tall with a gaping mouth that 'swallows' bad luck and misfortune. The unusual structure doubles as a performance stage during festivals. Despite its Instagram appeal, it remains far less crowded than Osaka's marquee shrines and sits within walking distance of Namba station.
Local tips
Visit during the Namba Yasaka winter festival in January for fire-walking rituals right in front of the lion head.
