Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown
restaurant
長崎新地中華街
Japan's oldest Chinatown where champon noodles were invented, a fusion of Chinese and Japanese flavors.
One of Japan's three great Chinatowns, Nagasaki's is the oldest and most intimate. Just two cross-streets long, it's the birthplace of champon (a creamy pork-bone noodle soup loaded with seafood and vegetables) and sara-udon (crispy fried noodles). The Lantern Festival in February transforms the entire district into a glowing wonderland.
Skip the main street restaurants. The tiny alleys behind have family-run shops with better champon. Shikairo is considered the original.
