Nagaoka City Museum of Local History
museum
郷土史料館
This museum’s design is based on the general appearance of castles in feudal Japan.
Shaped to reference Japanese castle architecture, this Nagaoka museum incorporates actual stones from the ramparts of Nagaoka Castle, which stood nearby until it was destroyed in the 1868 Boshin War civil conflict. The railway station now occupies the original castle site. Inside, displays trace the city's history from its origins to the present, including personal artifacts and handwritten poetry by the daimyo lords who governed the Nagaoka domain. The museum also commemorates notable figures from the area, among them Yamamoto Isoroku, the World War II commander-in-chief of Japan's naval fleet, who was born in the region.
