Nagahama Railway Museum

Built around Japan's oldest surviving station building, a brick-accented structure completed in 1882 that served as the southern terminal of a Lake Biwa to Sea of Japan rail line until 1899. The interior retains period furnishings, a replica ticket booth, and life-sized figures in era-appropriate clothing. A second building holds dioramas and a miniature train loop modeling the modern city. The final building houses two locomotives you can board: a 1942 black D51 steam engine and a 1957 red ED70 electric locomotive. Visitors can examine the controls, look into the coal firebox, and view both engines from a second-floor deck.
