Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark
landmark
室戸ユネスコ世界ジオパーク
UNESCO geopark where active tectonic uplift exposes fossil-studded ancient seafloor.
At Shikoku's southeastern tip, tectonic uplift continues pushing ancient seafloor above the waterline, creating a living geology textbook. The geopark visitor center explains the process before you walk among wave-sculpted rock terraces embedded with marine fossils. Cape Muroto Lighthouse, built in 1899 with Japan's largest lens at 2.6 meters, throws its beam 49 kilometers across the Pacific.
