Double-peaked volcano nicknamed Mount Fuji of Oita, defining landmark of the region's hot spring resort area.
Twin-peaked, 1,584-meter volcano that rises directly above Yufuin and is visible from almost everywhere in the hot spring town. The main trail to the summit starts from Makinoto Pass and reaches the top in about two hours, passing wildflower meadows in spring and golden susuki grasslands in autumn. From the crater rim, views extend across the Kuju range, the Beppu coastline, and sometimes across the Bungo Channel to Shikoku. After the hike, Yufuin's outdoor baths, many with the peak framed in view, are well suited for recovery. The mountain is a natural goal for anyone spending a day or two in the area.
