Mt. Usu
有珠山
Overview
Overlook sparkling Lake Toya from the active volcano, Mt. Usu. From the base of the neighbouring Mt Showa-shinzan.
One of Hokkaido's most active volcanoes, having erupted four times in the last century alone, most recently in 2000. A ropeway carries visitors from the base of neighboring Mt. Showa-shinzan to an observation platform near the summit, where you can peer into steaming craters and survey the vast caldera of Lake Toya below. The Volcano Science Museum at the base documents the eruptions with dramatic footage and preserved artifacts from buried homes. Walking trails wind through the aftermath landscape where buildings were swallowed by volcanic debris, offering a humbling reminder of nature's power. On clear days, the panorama stretches across the lake to the Pacific coast.
