Overview

Mt. Sanbe is a cluster of six volcanic peaks arranged in a loose ring within an ancient caldera. The four main peaks carry familial names in Japanese: Osanbe (man), Mesanbe (woman), Kosanbe (child), and Magosanbe (grandchild), with the tallest, Osanbe, reaching 1,126 meters. These four formed about 4,000 years ago in the volcano's most recent eruption. Hiking trails approach the summit from all sides, and a loop connects all the main peaks across the caldera rim. On clear days the view extends to the Sea of Japan to the north and Mt. Daisen rising in Tottori Prefecture to the east.
