Mt. Kyonotake

Mt. Kyonotake on Fukue Island's Miiraku Peninsula is one of the few shield volcanoes in Japan fully visible from base to summit, its rounded profile earning the name from its resemblance to a warrior's round shield laid flat. It erupted only once, about 300,000 years ago, and that single event shaped the entire Miiraku Peninsula. A Japan Self-Defense Force base now occupies the summit, where a pond is thought to mark the original crater. The surrounding farms grow satsuma imo sweet potatoes rather than rice, because the local water is not suited to rice cultivation.
