Overview

Mt. Koshikidake is a 1,301-meter stratovolcano in Kirishima, named after a koshiki rice steamer for its flat-topped profile.

1,301-meter stratovolcano in Kirishima, named after a koshiki rice steamer for its flat-topped profile. The trail around the crater rim delivers a 360-degree panorama, and on a clear day Sakurajima volcano in distant Kagoshima Bay comes into view. What makes the summit distinctive is its crater interior, which holds the only wetland pond in southern Kyushu. The pond is fringed by silver grass meadow and surrounded by moisture-loving plants, including mimikaki-gusa, an insect-eating bladderwort, and kobagi-boshi with its bell-shaped purple flowers. It is the kind of detail that makes the hike feel like more than just a view.
