Mt. Konpira

金比羅山
A 30-minute walk from Goza Fishing Port climbs to the Mount Konpira viewpoint at around 110 meters, where the land opens up to a 360-degree panorama of Shima City, Ago Bay, the Pacific, and the Kii Mountains to the southwest. On the way up, the trail passes Tsumekiri Fudoson Temple, where legend says the monk Kobo Daishi carved a stone figure of Fudo Myo-o using only his nails. That statue is kept from public view, but a stroking stone behind one of the buildings accepts wishes. Local female divers called ama pray here at the start and end of the fishing season for safe passage at sea.
