Overview
Mt. Jinba sits on the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures, about an hour from Shinjuku, and its 629-meter summit delivers views of Mt. Fuji, the Boso Peninsula, and Lake Tanzawa. The name translates roughly as horse camp mountain, a reference to military encampments set up here during 16th-century battles between the Takeda and Hojo clans. A white horse statue erected by the Hachioji Tourism Association in 1969 stands at the peak. Three teahouses serve Jinba soba, a buckwheat noodle dish made with shiitake mushrooms and local mountain vegetables. A full trail connects the summit to Mt. Takao, taking about seven to eight hours.
