Overview
These two peaks near Jododaira offer rewarding hikes through volcanic terrain and subalpine wetlands. Mt. Issaikyo's active Oana Crater steams continuously, and from its summit you can look down into Goshikinuma, a cobalt-blue crater lake. Mt. Higashi-Azuma leads through forests of Maries' fir to panoramic views of Lake Inawashiro and Mt. Bandai. Both trails start from the Jododaira Visitor Center. The round trip to Goshikinuma via Issaikyo takes about four hours. Check trail status before you go, as closures occur during elevated volcanic activity.
