Mt. Inutabudake

犬田布岳
Mt. Inutabudake at 417 meters is the highest point in Isen township on Tokunoshima Island and the only area in the township included in the Natural World Heritage site that spans Amami-Oshima, Iriomote, and parts of Okinawa. The 4-kilometer trail to the summit and down the other side passes through subtropical evergreen forest dominated by chinquapin and blue oak, and hosts rare species including a wild orchid called the Tokunoshima ebine. The Amami rabbit, once believed to have disappeared from this area, was recently photographed here by a motion-sensor camera. Ancient petroglyphs of bows and arrows near the peak have not been scientifically dated but may originate from the late Jomon period.
