Mt. Ikoma

Straddling the border between Nara and Osaka prefectures, Mt. Ikoma has been a crossroads of trade and pilgrimage for centuries. At 642 meters it is not a demanding climb, and several hiking trails lead up through mixed forest, with the cable car offering an easy alternative. The summit hosts an amusement park and a botanical garden, giving it a family-friendly character unusual for a mountain hike. On clear days the views stretch from Osaka Bay to the mountains of Yoshino, a reminder of how close city and countryside sit in the Kansai region.
