Overview

Mt. Hakuto rises 950 meters south of Lake Akan, with a trail from the ski area leading about two kilometers and ninety minutes to the observatory at 800 meters. The viewing deck looks over Lake Akan, Mt. Oakan, and the surrounding forest toward Mt. Meakan. Along the trail, volcanic activity is visible: steam rises from fumaroles and the ground near the top is warm from below. Small mud volcanoes called bokke appear along the path. Spring and summer bring wildflowers, including purple ezo-osakuraso and white nirinso. Autumn maple color makes September and October the most photographed time on the mountain.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
