Overview

Mt. Goken rises between Mure and Aji in Takamatsu, its five distinctive peaks giving the mountain its name, though one collapsed in a 1707 earthquake. You can reach the halfway point on foot or by cable car, arriving at Yakuriji Temple, said to have been founded by the priest Kukai in 829 and the 85th stop on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The temple looks out over the Seto Inland Sea. The mountain's granite, known as Aji Stone, is prized by sculptors and architects for its fine grain and has been quarried here for hundreds of years.
