Overview
Mt. Boju, at 409 meters, takes its name from the Buddhist monks who once lived on its slopes and practiced mountain asceticism here. A hiking trail of about 5 kilometers winds along the ridge, marked by 33 Kannon statues dedicated by local residents in 1860. In Japan, routes connecting 33 Kannon images are considered pilgrimage routes offering special merit to those who pay respects at each stop. The full route takes about four hours and is mostly shaded by trees. Parking is available near Boju Shrine, which also has a secondary trailhead.
