Mt. Akita-Komagatake is Akita Prefecture's tallest mountain, with several peaks including Mt. Onamedake at 1,637 meters, and sits within Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
Akita Prefecture's tallest mountain, with several peaks including Mt. Onamedake at 1,637 meters, and sits within Towada-Hachimantai National Park. It is widely regarded as one of the best places in northern Japan to see alpine plants, with several hundred species including primrose, avens, and deep pink komakusa dicentra blooming from mid-June through mid-August. Buses run regularly to the eighth station from the Akita-Komagatake Information Center, where staff can brief hikers on current volcanic activity levels before they set out. From the eighth station, a short trek reaches summit views of Mt. Chokaisan, Mt. Iwate, and Lake Tazawa below.
