Overview

A moderate mountain hike above Hakone with one of the closest and most dramatic Mt. Fuji views in the Kanto region.

At 1,212m, Mt. Kintoki rises above Hakone's volcanic landscape and offers arguably the best Mt. Fuji view accessible by a moderate day hike. Named after the legendary strongman Kintaro, the 2-hour ascent from Kintoki-tozanguchi bus stop passes through forest before emerging at a summit with panoramic views of Fuji, Hakone's caldera, and Suruga Bay. A rustic mountain hut at the top serves udon and miso soup.

Local tips

Start the hike by 7am on a clear winter morning. Fuji's snow cap is most visible, the air is crispest, and you'll reach the summit before the cloud layer forms.
