Mount Ishizuchi area
nature
Western Japan's highest peak at 1,982m and one of the country's seven sacred mountains, with the ropeway approach and Omogokei Gorge nearby.
Mount Ishizuchi rises to 1,982 meters at the spine of Shikoku and is one of Japan's seven sacred peaks. The Ishizuchi Ropeway carries visitors most of the way up from the northern approach; the final ascent uses chain-pulled scrambles to the summit shrine. Yokomineji, temple 60 of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, sits on the western pilgrimage approach. The Omogokei Gorge to the south is famous for autumn maples and is the river-and-cliff scenery the area is best known for outside the climbing season.
Climbing season runs roughly May through November; the ropeway runs year-round but the chain-scramble approach is dangerous in winter. For autumn leaves without the climb, the gorge alone is a worthwhile day.
