Mount Haguro Five-Story Pagoda
temple
羽黒山五重塔
10th-century National Treasure pagoda standing in a primeval cedar forest on Mount Haguro.
A National Treasure pagoda standing alone in a primeval cedar forest at the base of Mount Haguro. Built in the 10th century without a single nail, the 29-meter wooden structure is the oldest five-story pagoda in the Tohoku region. The approach through towering cryptomeria trees and past a sacred waterfall creates one of Japan's most atmospheric pilgrimage walks.
