Hike to the famous fire character above Kyoto with panoramic city views.

The mountain behind Ginkaku-ji bearing the giant 'dai' character burned during the August 16 Gozan no Okuribi festival. A moderate 45-minute hike from the Silver Pavilion leads to the character site, which doubles as one of the best panoramic viewpoints overlooking all of Kyoto.

Local tips

Start from behind Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion). The viewpoint at the top of the character offers a 180-degree Kyoto panorama. Sunset hikes are popular but bring a flashlight for the descent.
