鳥海山
Tohoku's highest peak with a symmetrical cone and crystal-clear spring waters at its base.
The highest peak in Tohoku at 2,236 meters, called 'Dewa Fuji' for its symmetrical volcanic cone. At its base, the Mototaki spring produces crystal-clear water emerging from mossy stones in dozens of delicate streams.
An active volcano at 2,236 meters on the Akita-Yamagata border, considered a sacred mountain (Dewa Fuji) and one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The standard route from Hatchozaka trailhead takes 6 to 7 hours round trip. The summit holds a crater lake at 2,000 meters, one of Japan's higher alpine lakes. The mountain stands directly above the Sea of Japan coast; on clear days the view extends to Sado Island. Snowfield conditions persist on the upper slopes through June.
