Motonosumi Shrine
shrine
元乃隅神社
the deity of the shrine was separa.
On a clifftop above the Japan Sea in Nagato, reached by a path threaded through 123 vermilion torii gates that curve down toward the water's edge. The legend goes that a white fox appeared to a local fisherman in 1955 and directed him to enshrine the deity here. The final gate at the cliff edge has an offertory box at the top rather than the base, and visitors try to toss coins up into it from below. The views across the rocky coastline are clear on good days. Access requires a bit of walking, and the path can be slippery in wet weather.
